Conquest
of Space
Paramount, 1955, Technicolor, 80 min.
This
George Pal sequel to Destination Moon turned out to be
much more spectacular than its predecessor. In addition to the
standard space shuttle that went from Earth to the "space weel"
and back again, there was a Martian landing rocket. Looking like
a gigantic flying wing with round appendages, the veicle took
a crew from the orbiting station to our nearest planetary neightbor.
It flew horizontally, and landed in the same manner. However,
the return trip was accomplished via a piggy-back rocket that
rose vertically from the mothership's back, and then broke away
from the wing device; two vehicles in one.
